The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and its founding Charter. Celebrations for this landmark event have stretched across the year and have been attended by a vast range of people globally. It is hoped that highlighting the significance of the UN’s 75th anniversary and reflecting on its history and our achievements, will holistically capture and promote our collective commitment to cooperation, multilateralism and global solidarity. That it will bring us together to reimagine a world “rebalanced,” and designed and built together for present and future generations. At a time of great upheaval, change, and uncertainty from both the economic and social perspective, this milestone occasion is a reminder that, like the United Nations’ humble beginnings, times of struggle can become an opportunity for positive change and transformation.
While the Charter of the United Nations was signed on June 26, 1945 by the representatives of 50 countries, the United Nations officially came to be what it is today on October 24, 1945, when the Charter was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and by a majority of other signatories. For this reason, United Nations Day is celebrated annually on this date.
In celebration of UN day in 2020, the annual concert, which is usually held in the General Assembly Hall, was pre-recorded and held online. Sponsored by the Mission of Italy, with the theme “Reimagine, Rebalance, Restart: recovering together for our shared humanity,” it showcased a performance featuring Roberto Bolle, accompanied by other world class etoiles, the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, and several classical, modern and reimagined dances, curated specifically for the UN Day Concert, and all recorded at La Scala Theatre in Milan. It gave us an opportunity to connect and create a common understanding through art and culture, thought by many to be the “the fertile ground from which genuine solidarity can emerge.” The UN Day Concert performance streamed LIVE on this page as well as on UN Web TV and the UN social media channels.
