UNANIMA International’s 2022 Woman of Courage, Helena Maleno, met with Pope Francis on June 23 to discuss the human rights abuses and deaths of migrants trying to reach Europe by sea from Africa.
She highlighted the importance of women’s religious congregations, who support the work of Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders)- an organization founded by Helena that rescues sea vessels carrying migrants that are in danger of sinking and provides support for them once they arrive in Europe
