69th Commission on the Status of Women

The 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women took place from March 10 – 21, 2025. The focus of this Commission was on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly.

On March 13, 2025, UI Executive Director Jean Quinn and UI Deputy Director Liana Almony both made remarks at a side event for CSW69 titled “Inclusive Policies to Achieve Gender Equality, Women Empowerment and End Homelessness.” UNANIMA International co-sponsored this event with the NGO Working Group to End Homelessness, the NGO Committee on Social Development and the NGO Committee on Migration.

UI Executive Director Jean Quinn spoke on the importance of acknowledging intersectionality to make progress towards gender equality, and UI Deputy Director Liana Almony spoke on the widespread exclusion of women from institutions of power and governance and its direct impact on homelessness among women.

On March 18 UI Executive Director, Jean Quinn, made remarks as a keynote speaker at a high level CSW69 side event titled “Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Key to Ending Violence Against Women.”

UNANIMA International were honored to co-organize this event with WorldWIDE Network: Nigeria and Habitat International Coalition.

In her remarks, Jean highlighted the intersections between violence against women, gender inequality and homelessness at CSW69 and the importance of implementing an intersectional approach to designing effective services and policy solutions.

On March 13, 2025, the Women, Faith, & Climate Network co-hosted an event titled “Women of Faith Leading Change: Going Further, Faster, Together for Climate and Gender Justice.”

We at UNANIMA International were honored to co-organize this event with the Women, Faith, and Climate Network, UNEP, and the Permanent Missions of Ireland, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone.

In her remarks, UI Deputy Director, Liana Almony, discussed UI and faith-based communities’ approach to facilitating a genuinely just ecological transition to renewable energies, as well as the need for collaboration between policymakers and women of faith to drive progress on gender equality and climate justice.

On March 17, 2025,  UI Deputy Director Liana Almony led a breakout session and made remarks in her capacity as the Chair of the NGO Committee on Social Development at a side event for CSW69 titled “Accelerating Gender Justice and Safe Workplaces for All: Advancing ILO Convention No. 190 for a Violence-Free Future.

This event was organized by the NGO Coalition to End Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (ILO C-190), which includes the NGO Committee on Financing for Development, the NGO Committee on the Commission on the Status of Women, the NGO Committee on Social Development, the NGO Committee on Migration, and the NGO Committee to Stop Trafficking in Persons.

During the breakout session, Liana facilitated a discussion regarding some of the key challenges faced by governments in countries that have not ratified C-190, as well as some of the ways in which international cooperation and pressure from the global community can help in encouraging these countries to ratify and implement C-190. Additionally, Liana closed the session with some remarks on how coalition members and civil society as a whole can seize opportunities to accelerate the ratification and enforcement of C-190.
