Like many organizations globally, UNANIMA International has recently released a statement on the COVID19 pandemic. Our organization’s statement gives a niche focus to the Impact of COVID19 on people, specifically women and children, experiencing family homelessness and poverty. The Statement is aligned with the Priority Theme of the last Session of the UN Commission on Social Development (CSocD58): “Affordable housing and social protection systems for all to address homelessness”.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis this statement evaluates global attention of Family Homelessness within the pandemic’s international political and media sphere as well as analyses numerous evident and potential effects on families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity within the context of the pandemic.

The most vulnerable and furthest left behind have been further marginalized in this global crisis – including individuals and families experiencing homelessness who are directly affected and intensely suffering. Now, more than ever, it is time for us all to act upon the commitments taken by Member States at the last Commission on Social Development in February 2020 to provide access to affordable housing and social protection coverage to all.

You can find our statement in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Bengla and Chinese in the Family Homelessness resource section of our website. For further information on Family Homelessness you can also access our recent publications Family Homelessness through the Lens of the 2030 AgendaHidden Faces of Homelessness International Research Families and The Impact of Personal & Family Circumstances on Homelessness. We hope you will find them valuable and that your network and/or organization will use the current crisis as an opportunity to advocate for governments to take the right actions for its people, and by so doing, to put their rights, dignity, and lives first.
